How Does GFA World Answer the Question: What Is a Christian Missionary?
What is a Christian missionary? The call to christian mission is rooted in Jesus’ own example of sending His followers into the world with love and lasting purpose. Their example shapes every true missionary today. At GFA World, our national missionaries radically follow Jesus, proclaiming His love to those who don’t yet know Christ and establish churches in places where there are non. GFA national missionaries are committed to serving the most marginalized, like children trapped in poverty and widows, while remaining rooted in the example of the Apostles in the book of Acts.[1]
A Christian missionary is someone who hears God’s call and steps out in faith. It is a life of purpose, shaped by the way Jesus lived and served among the people of His day. The Heart of Every Missionary Call
GFA World began as an evangelistic movement focused on reaching those not yet reached in regions of Asia with the Good News of Jesus Christ. However, we quickly recognized that sharing the message of Christ was only the first step. Church planting is at the heart of lasting change. The aim of missions was never just preaching but also planting churches and building strong worship communities.[2] Every local church planted becomes a center of hope and growth for its people. In obedience to Jesus’ command, our missionaries work tirelessly to “turn the world upside down” (Acts 17:6). They sacrifice their comfort, and often their safety, to bring Good News hope to places where it has never been heard.
This missionary spirit is alive today as our national missionaries establish churches where there are none, and providing practical help for those in need. This mission work meets both spiritual and physical needs. It reaches people where they are with the love of Christ. GFA’s national missionaries focus especially on unreached people groups in Africa and Asia who have never had a chance to hear the Gospel. This help occurs according to the specific needs of the people they minister to. For instance, our Child Sponsorship Program, helps children and their families break the cycle of poverty though providing assistance like education support, clean water or medical care.
The needs differ from one village to the next, but the goal stays the same. Bringing hope and healing through the love of Jesus to those who have never known it is what drives every missionary. Workers adapt to each community they serve, always pointing back to Christ. This calling is never about just one kind of need.
Take the story of Saffi, a young girl forced to work in a carpet factory to help her mother, Addia, support their family. Without intervention, Saffi’s dreams of an education and a future would have been shattered. However, GFA World’s Child Sponsorship Program gave Saffi a second chance by providing school supplies, tutoring and nutritious meals. This not only relieved Addia’s financial burdens but also allowed Saffi to return to school, where she began excelling academically.[3] Her story shows how long term work in a community can change lives. Walking alongside families until lasting change takes hold — that is the heart of Christian mission. This is what faithful service looks like: one life changed, then another, then a whole community.
Through stories like Saffi’s, GFA World exemplifies a Christian missionary’s role as being that of both a spiritual and a practical servant. We work to meet immediate physical needs—such as food, education and medical care—while pointing individuals to the eternal hope found in Jesus Christ. Care and sharing work together, each one feeding the other. Both word and deed are part of every true mission work. We believe that fulfilling the Great Commission means caring for “the least of these” (Matthew 25:40) and ensuring no one is left behind.
A Cross-Cultural Calling
The work of a Christian missionary takes many forms. But every form shares one base: a will to go where God sends and serve how He leads. From villages in Africa to communities in Asia, missionaries bring hope where it is needed most. This calling has held strong for two thousand years, living on today through true servants around the world.
GFA World reports that national missionaries are well placed to reach those who have yet to hear of Jesus. They share the same language, customs, and daily life as the people they serve. This cross cultural approach lets the message of Christ take root within the local culture. It has proven lasting across many years of faithful service.
Our approach extends beyond Asia, reflecting a global vision for missions. While the ministry began in Asia, the Lord has opened doors for expansion into Africa, particularly Rwanda, where, in partnership with the Anglican Church of Rwanda, we are providing food relief, child sponsorship programs and building a hospital.[4] Our mission remains steadfast: to bring Christ’s love wherever He calls, whether in Asia, Africa or beyond. What Does the Bible Teach About the Christian Mission?
God has always wanted every nation to know His love. This truth runs from Abraham all the way to Jesus. The apostle paul lived out this call in a powerful way. He traveled across the Roman world to start new churches and teach new believers. His travels in the book of Acts show how the early church worked to share the Gospel with people who had never heard it.
From start to finish, the Bible tells one story. It is the story of a God who reaches out to heal what is broken. The same God who called Abraham now sends His followers into the world with a message of hope. Every believer who answers this call stands in a long line of faithful witnesses.
Jesus gave His followers a clear command in Matthew 28 — it is the Great Commission, and it is the base of every Christian mission. The words of Matthew 28 19-20 tell believers to go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them. They are to teach these new disciples to follow all that Christ commanded. Yet this work was never meant to be done alone. He also promised the holy spirit would give His followers the power they need. The Holy Spirit gives courage and wisdom to every missionary.
The Great Commission is not just for a few special workers. It is a call for the whole Church. Each believer has a part to play in reaching the world with the love of God. Some go to far places, and some send from home, but all share in the same mission.
