What Are the Challenges and Successes of Missionary Work in Africa?

Historically, missionaries in Africa faced monumental challenges, including linguistic barriers, harsh climates and resistance to foreign influence. These efforts, which began as early as the 19th century, laid the groundwork for the widespread establishment of churches, schools and healthcare facilities. Today, this legacy serves as a foundation for the continued expansion of missions focused on both spiritual and practical outreach.[1]

One of the key challenges in Christian missionary work in Africa today is poverty. With nearly 40% of Sub-Saharan Africa’s population living on less than $1.90 a day, economic hardships exacerbate issues like malnutrition, lack of education and limited access to health care.[2] These conditions often hinder the ability of communities to fully engage with and benefit from missionary efforts.[3]

Another pressing challenge is access to remote areas. Vast, rural landscapes combined with poor infrastructure make it difficult for missionaries to reach the most underserved populations. Political instability and occasional resistance to Christianity in certain regions further complicate the work.
