What Are Some Solutions to Poverty that Can Create a Lasting and Meaningful Impact?
At GFA World, when we consider what are some solutions to poverty, we prioritize those that create lasting change. We believe one of the most impactful answers is empowering families with resources that help them achieve self-sufficiency. Our annual Christmas Critter Campaign and its innovative “Chicken Challenge” provide a simple yet powerful way to break the chains of poverty and bring hope to some of the world’s poorest communities. By donating pairs of chickens, donors offer families a source of steady nutrition and income, which can transform their lives. Chickens multiply quickly, and provide protein-rich eggs for food and additional income when sold, helping families afford essentials like school supplies, clothing and medical care.[1]
One inspiring example comes from a widow named Mayra, who faced significant hardships after the loss of her husband and daughter. With no source of income, Mayra relied on her son, whose earnings were barely enough to meet daily needs. Despite her desire to raise chickens, financial constraints made it impossible. However, through GFA World’s program, she received a pair of chickens, which brought her hope and a potential source of income.
“I am really happy to receive this pair of chickens,” Mayra shared. “But I am so happy because of your love and concern for me. I believe this chicken will help me to raise at least some amount of income in the days to come.”[2] Stories like Mayra’s highlight how simple gifts can empower individuals to take steps toward self-sufficiency and restore dignity and hope.
The Chicken Challenge is just one part of GFA World’s Christmas Critter Campaign, which offers donors a variety of ways to help families escape poverty. In addition to chickens, donors can provide things like goats, water buffalo, sewing machines, clean water filters and warm clothing. Each gift is carefully chosen to address specific needs and equip families with tools to build better futures. These efforts reflect the heart of GFA World’s mission: sharing the love of Christ through practical acts of kindness.[3]
For many years, GFA World has partnered with indigenous missionaries to serve millions of people in Africa and Asia. Through initiatives like clean water projects, women’s empowerment programs and poverty-fighting campaigns, we aim to provide lasting solutions that meet both physical and spiritual needs. Our late founder, K.P. Yohannan, often reminded us of the eternal impact of this work, saying, “The only thing that will matter is what was done to impact lives for eternity.”[4]
Poverty is a complex issue, but solutions like the Chicken Challenge offer simple yet profound ways to make a difference. By equipping families with sustainable resources, GFA World helps break the cycle of poverty and restore dignity and hope. Together, we can tackle the question, what are some solutions to poverty, by empowering the most vulnerable and bringing transformation that lasts a lifetime.
