Is There a Bible Passage about Poverty That Shows That God Values Impoverished People?
Mark 12 is an impactful Bible passage about poverty. In Mark 12:41-44, Jesus observes a widow giving an offering to the synagogue treasury. This widow was poor—likely because she could not make much money without her husband—so she only gave two small copper coins. Onlookers mocked the widow, but Jesus regarded her fondly.
“Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.’”
Jesus does not care about the amount of a gift, donation or tithe; instead, Jesus cares about the person’s heart. Some people in the synagogue gave extravagantly to flaunt their wealth and pride; the widow gave her meager offering with humility. Jesus honors how the widow gave so generously despite her meager circumstances.
God recognizes the dignity and value of every person, regardless of their circumstances.
In Psalm 35:10, David exclaims,
“My whole being will exclaim, ‘Who is like you, Lord? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them.’”
David rejoices that God cares for people experiencing poverty; he does not forsake people when they experience hardship.
Later in Psalms, David writes that
“The poor will see and be glad—you who seek God, may your hearts live! The Lord hears the needy and does not despise his captive people.”
Psalm 69:32-33
God sees, loves and cares for people in poverty.
God’s love in action may take the form of providing nutritious food, clean water and school supplies for children in developing countries, providing education for women and children to give them hope and opportunities, or building shelters for the homeless.
God cares deeply for all people; He invites his followers to do the same. Ask yourself how you can provide hope and relief for individuals and communities experiencing poverty.
